Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
FromSoftware has established itself as an iconic video game developer at this moment. They are pretty much synonymous with the genre of games they popularized. The latest of those games was 2022’s Game of the Year winner, Elden Ring. It was an open-world take on FromSoftware’s SoulsBorne series of games. Now, Tencent is working hard on making a similar game.
Indeed, the multimedia giant has smelt success in what FromSoftware and Namco served their fans. And they are reportedly working hard on recreating that magic for mobile gamers. How good would it be, though?
Would Tencent be able to recreate the magic of the Elden Ring on mobile?
Years ago, when the era of smartphones was just starting, gamers were curious about them. Before that, phones like N-Gage had tried combining cellphones and gaming consoles, but smartphones were something else; they gave everyone more freedom. Developers had more power at their disposal, and gamers had a more open-ended environment to explore. That dream went downhill pretty fast, though. Those promising games were replaced by a bunch of garbage that brought about a plague of microtransactions in the gaming industry.

So, how well would that “Elden Ring”-type game from Tencent do? It would probably be a hit, and Tencent would cash in on the hype that has been generated around that game and its upcoming DLC, Shadow of the Erdtree. But this does not mean it would be any good, though. It would technically be yet another poorly designed rip-off with a whole economy of gems and coins set up around it, ala Genshin Impact. That game too started as a lookalike of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but now it has its own share of whales who cannot stop wasting their time on it.
Only if it was not Tencent but some other developer. Maybe Capcom, or anyone else, fans could have hoped for a promising open-world soulslike experience on the go, but nah, who needs that? Daily login rewards and meaningless battle passes would do.
