Far Cry might be one of Ubisoft’s biggest franchises at the moment. The last game in the series, Far Cry 6, sold well enough for the developer to even consider a new game. While that game gets made amongst everything else that this developer works on, let’s talk about the direction of this series a bit.
For a very long time, this series has not changed much; it has only gotten more expensive, better-looking, and more expensive. This time, I hope they go back in time.
Ubisoft should take the series back to Far Cry 2
Years ago, when Ubisoft showed off Far Cry 3, my mind was blown. I could not believe that Far Cry 2, the game I had been playing for at least a year, was getting such a fancy sequel. The game was dubbed by many as Skyrim with Guns, and it was in some ways Skyrim with Guns sans the mystical feel.

Then came four—the game I was supposed to like on account of being an Indian. In a game set in India, some foreigners speak bad Hindi, trying to convince some poor gamers how authentic that game is. Gameplay-wise, it was exactly the same game as Far Cry 3, but with a little chopper and a new location. It was still fun, but the fun was diminishing.
Then came one of my favorite modern Far Cry games, Primal. Far Cry Primal reminded me why I loved Far Cry 2 so much. It was hard; you had to actually be on foot at all times, and the combat was challenging. If one turned survival mode on, they got a very difficult yet fun experience.

Eventually, Far Cry 5 came too, and now I was convinced that Ubisoft was officially out of ideas. They have now started adding companions and animals as legitimate gameplay features. They were really pushing the bar of repetition here, making the same game again and again, from an island ruled by pirates to a state ruled by a bunch of religious fanatics.
A bunch of DLCs and Far Cry 6 followed and later gave fans something revolutionary: a backpack with AOE attacks. The games evolved from a person surviving malaria and an African civil war to using rocket backpacks.
Now that they have ruined the series to its core, here’s hoping Ubisoft takes a U-turn and gives us something similar to Far Cry 2 this time around. It is about time we got a good far cry.
